Water: The Fluid of Life

As we know that the human body is about 60% to 70% water. It is a constituent of blood and other vital fluids and plays a key role in the elimination of body wastes and regulation of body temperature. The more you sweat, the more water your body loses. Hence it is imperative for adults to drink between 6-8 glasses of water every day. Water content is also found, in varying proportions, in other foods that we eat. Milk, tea, coffee, juices, and beverages are all water-based and add to the fluid content in the body.

Drinking plenty of water provides many health benefits:

  • Better bladder and bowel functioning. Fluids speed the elimination of waste matter from your body, thus preventing constipation and urinary tract infections.

  • Reduces the risk of cancer. Fluids help to flush out or dilute carcinogens in the bladder and colon cutting the risk of cancer.

  • Fewer chances of kidney stones. Drinking plenty of water helps prevent kidney stones from developing or recurring.

  • Better respiratory health. If you are dehydrated, it increases your susceptibility to colds and other respiratory infections.

  • A healthier mouth. Drinking water increases saliva, which neutralizes cavity-causing acids in the mouth, washes away food particles and prevents gum disease and oral problems.

  • Aids weight control. Drinking water before meals provides satiety and helps curb your appetite. So have water in plenty prior to starting your meal.

Clean Water:

The water you drink needs to be clean and potable. It should be free from bacteria and viruses and harmful chemical substances such as pesticides and industrial wastes. Boiling water for 10-15 minutes or using a water purifier can make it safe and germ-free. Water is also advantageous for those dieting since it has no calories and is quite filling.

And of course, there is nothing like a cool glass of water to quench your thirst.
